Thinking of going Paleo/Keto/Low-Carb?…Read this first
The other day, one of my friends asked me what I thought about her going keto.
I asked her why she was considering it.
She said she weighs way more than she’d like to, wants to lose weight fast, reset her system and just start feeling better. She said the last time she went keto, she dropped 20 lbs.
And, there’s the rub…
“The last time I went keto…”
Did you hear it???
That one comment, let me know that her real issue is not about the food she’s eating. Of course, food choice is important but the true underlying issue is something else all together.
So many people struggle with their weight for so long that they stop being able to see what they’re doing - trying the same tactics over and over hoping for a different result. That will drive anyone crazy.
Their diet may be going great one day and then something happens that knocks them off course. The specifics always look different on the surface (a holiday, a stressful family event/a particularly bad week at the office) - but at the end of the day, they’re all the same. These people are not stupid. They know that diets, or saying they’re going to exercise more or differently this time, doesn’t work. But they want to do SOMETHING.
Because in the short run, doing something feels better than not doing anything.
Even if you know you’re going to end up right back where you started.
That’s how humans work when we’re desperate. We think, “Well, I don’t know what to do differently so I’ll do the same thing as before, but I’ll just try harder.”
It never works. (Or at least not for long.)
And then after years of trying hard, and being fatter and unhappier than when we started, we become jaded across our whole lives.
We start to give up on other things, because we think of ourselves as failures. Or we distract ourselves, putting all our attention on work or family.
Eventually, we just give up. And then that’s the myth that we pass down to the younger generation, “This is just what happens when you get older, dear.”
The moral of this story is that if you know deep down, another diet will not help…
If last time you lost 20 lbs, and gained back 30…
If you went to the gym everyday for 2 months straight, and then stopped…
If you’ve gotten to the point where you know, there’s no magic pill. No special vitamin. No 5 minute-full-body workout video will solve your problem long-term.
But you want to do SOMETHING…
Then, start by learning what got you where you are in the first place, and the simple (and, yes, easy) steps you can take each day to change those underlying patterns.
Then you won’t be asking your friends about what diet they’re on, they’ll be asking you what changed in you.
